Posted under Thoughts by adminI have made a somewhat disturbing observation. I have been picking my kids up from school quite a bit over the last couple of weeks. I have noticed a lot of parents picking up their elementary aged kids. That isn’t so unusual I suppose. However, I have noticed that a lot of these kids live just blocks from school. I have wondered why parents can’t allow their kids to walk home from school when it is only a few blocks. I am not talking about small children. I am talking about older kids or families with older and younger kids. Okay, so now this does not sound all that disturbing, I know.
Here are my disturbing thoughts. Parents do all sorts of things to ensure that their children grow up safe, healthy and happy. We give them multivitamin supplement. We pick them up from school so they don’t get kidnapped. And then there is the happy part. Somewhere, somehow the definition of a child’s happiness has gotten skewed. Parents are scared to death to let their kids walk home from school but they have no problem sending their kids into adult situations. Have you seen this sort of thing? Kids dressing up to go to dances in adult party dresses. And having dates to dances at the ripe old age of 12. And then we wonder why our kids are having sex at younger and younger ages. Kids are pushed in acting like adults at young ages and the repercussions are enormous. Limitless really.
So, I say let your kids walk to and from school. And tell them no when it comes to doing things that are meant for adults!
